Established by Essex County Council, the Team Essex Ambassador’s Award provides elite athletes in Essex with grants to help maximise their chances of medal success at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Recognised by their National Governing Body of Sports, our ambassadors are integral to promoting sports across the county, working with Schools and Sports clubs to inspire the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes within Essex.
Nine of our Team Essex Ambassadors have qualified for the London 2012 Games. These are: Saskia Clarke (Sailing),Daniel Bentley (Boccia Men’s singles),Hannah Stodel (Paralympic Sailing), Roberto Pavoni (swimming), Chloe Rogers (Hockey), James Huckle (Shooting) and Emma Hollis (Paralympic Swimming) and Laura Trott (Cycling) and Dominic King (Race Walking who was funded by the programme in 2008/09). The award has helped by enabling some of the athletes to give up work and train full time, help with travel expenses to important competition and training sessions, fund training camps, and contribute towards vital equipment, training kit and sports science and medical support. In return, the athletes have been an inspiration to the people of Essex, particularly with young people; inspiring people try new sports, get fit or strive for excellence through raising the profile of their sports and giving inspirational talks around the county.
16 athletes have been part of the London 2012 inspired art project called ‘Journey to the Podium’ illustrating how the project has also inspired creative and entreprenerial activity in the county which will document a legacy in the county through a prestigious collection of art inspired by the county’s London 2012 hopefuls. The athletes with their artists have also delivered workshops in schools as part of this project – using art and sport to enrich learning and development. Read more>>
