Although Sarah now concentrates on hurdling, she started out as a long jumper, winning four successive English Schools titles. She leapt 6.32 metres when called up as a replacement for Denise Lewis in the 1998 European cup and later that year recorded a personal best of 6.52 when she finished fourth at the World Junior Championships.
