Writtle College

Writtle College is a unique place. Set in its own 220 hectare estate the campus is located within beautiful parkland and landscaped gardens, 2 miles from the county town of Chelmsford which provides all amenities, Stansted Airport (17 miles) Olympic Village (37 miles) and within easy striking distance of the heart of London, therefore making Writtle one of the closest equestrian venues to the Games.

It has an international reputation as one of the UK's leading institutions in Equestrian training. The diversity of the equine/sports resources, extensive estate and accommodation make us an ideal prospect for hosting international teams allowing Writtle to provide a complete package for visiting teams.

Facilities include:

  • Stabling for around seventy horses and incorporates a range of designs from traditional boxes to American barn style stables.
  • 50 x 40 m indoor arena (with training mirrors and a gallery seating 136),
  • Two large outdoor arenas (25 x 65 and 20 x 40 m)

  • Grazing and an equine aqua spa is available for use locally.
  • Equine scientific resources are also available such as state of the art video/biomechanical analysis equipment for both horse and rider along with heart rate monitors for equestrian training which can be supported by qualified and experienced staff. 
  • A fully equipped specialist equine veterinary facility is situated 6 miles from Writtle.
  • Onsite accommodation for up to 400 including a full range of en-suite rooms from single, double or twin occupancy. Some rooms can cater for people with disabilities, all equipped with internet/television access and each block has a common room/lounge area and a kitchen. 
  • Launderette, recreational facilities, and much of the campus is covered by CCTV to aid onsite security.
  • Conference facilities to cater for a range of events, from meetings to corporate launches and exhibitions/conferences, accommodating up to 200 delegates

 Hosting Experience:

  • Hosted the Canadian event team for three weeks prior to a major championships in the UK. The entire team consisted of 8 horses, riders, trainers, grooms, owners, officials who all utilised the full range of facilities at Writtle. Every aspect of their stay was organised by the staff which included the housing of the horses and delegates, provided a full catering service, transportation to sporting events (including the championship site) and provided site seeing tours of the country.
  • Throughout the year Writtle hosts many shows which have included showjumping, affiliated dressage up to Prix St George, one day events and lecture demos from professional world class riders. 
  • The estate plays host to many other large events throughout the year which attracts many thousands of spectators to any one event. 
  • Provided full accommodation and facilities for the World Scout Jamboree which necessitated hosting many different nationalities from around the world for a period of 4 weeks.
  • Writtle hosts a variety of international visitors to the college ranging from academic delegates from all over the world attending meetings, conferences and events. 
  • One key member of staff is currently eventing at 3 star level and is on the Olympic pathway and therefore fully conversant with the requirements of competing at world level.
