Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre

Riverside's location within the heart of the town centre provides an ideal opportunity for visiting teams based locally to have direct access to a wide range of amenities and support services, and is within walking distance of the regional bus and railway stations.

Key Facilities:

  • Multi-purpose sports hall, capable of mixed simultaneous use and designed to accommodate up to county badminton standards of play. 
  • The six-court sports hall is 936m (36 metres in length and 26 metres wide) with a clear ceiling height of 9.1 metres, lighting levels set at 450 lux and linoleum flooring on a semi-sprung base. 
  • The hall can accommodate up to two competition areas for Judo and six for Wrestling, with access to up to 80 approved standard mats. 
  • Viewing gallery overlooking from two sides of the hall catering for 120 spectators with an additional hall capacity of 500. 
  • Banked seating in the hall accommodating up to 300 people
  • Comprehensive equipment stock including 5 trampolines, table tennis tables, badminton posts and nets, volleyball and gymnastic equipment. 
  • The hall also has an electronic scoring facility with a count down clock. A fully accessible shower, toilet and changing facility is located directly alongside the sports hall for use by Paralympic athletes, in addition to the male and female changing facilities.
  • 3 swimming pools, The main competition pool is 33.3 metres (length) by 12.5 metres (width), six-lane, indoor, competition pool. The depth of this pool ranges from 0.9m to 3.8m (3ft to 12ft 6).
  • Diving pit (12.5m x 12.5m at 3.8m depth) within the Main Pools complex, which accommodates 1-metre and 3-metre spring- boards, and a 5-metre fixed diving platform. 
  • A spectator-viewing gallery overlooks the Main Pool, with seating for over 240 people. 
  • Ice rink (the only one in Essex)
  • 50-station Excel fitness suite
  • Two flexible exercise/fitness studios

  • Meeting room equipped with flat-screen television for audio-visual presentations. There is also an air-conditioned multi-purpose exercise room with stereo-sound facilities.

 Hosting Experience:

  • Riverside Ice & Leisure has an extensive range of experience at hosting large-scale indoor events delivering International and Regional scale events and competitions from a wide range of different sporting disciplines. 
  • Over the years the centre has built up a reputation for high quality gymnastics provision which has ensured its ongoing relationship with the British Schools Gymnastics Association. Riverside hosts a number of annual County and local level gymnastics events with around 500 participants, including Essex Schools Junior Team competition, Essex Primary & Secondary Schools Floor & Vault competitions; as well as the Chelmsford Primary Schools Gymnastics Association Trampoline Competition. 
  • Swimming events include District level galas for the Scouts and Mid-Essex
  • Primary Schools for up to 300 people.
  • Large-scale sports hall competitions include the Roller Hockey International, and the Eastern Regional Basketball Competition heats and finals, both with around 450 participants.
  • Martial Arts tournaments including Karate tournament England V Wales, Kyokushinkai karate tournament and Kick-boxing tournament, attracting crowds of up to 500 people; as well as Wrestling for around 500 and Amateur Boxing Association tournaments with up to 400 people.
  • With the only ice rink in Essex, the centre plays host to the Chelmsford Chieftains Ice Hockey team, currently in the English Premier League. 
  • Chelmsford Opens, a national competition, and has been used for many years by a number of young up and coming British figure-skating and ice dance champions, who have received training from various members of the centre's team of ice professionals.
