On July 24th 2010 at White Colne Village Hall, White Colne Parish Council organised a 2km country walk, table tennis tournament, petanque tournament, darts competition, sports quiz as oart of London 2012 Open Weekend and the Essex Rural Community fund.
Approximately 150 people took park including about 30 Young People, plus 14 Volunteers, many of them “new” to volunteering.
In the evening the Hall transformed into pub for the evening with a barbeque available.
This was a well supported event by families -age ranging from babies in arms to senior citizens. The winner of the table tennis tournament (outdoor) was in his late 60’s, and the winning team for the petanque included a seven year old child. White Colne medals were used to to reward winners and participants.
Many people attended who had never played petanque or table tennis before, and they enjoyed learning a new sporting skill. As both facilities are outdoors, many residents have now vowed to make the effort to play regularly.
White Colne Parish Council were able to showcase their village hall and the recently improved facilities, plus the walk was led over their Doorstep Green. The walk was guided by an experienced volunteer who was able to chat about the flora, fauna and wildlife to be found in the area, and again many people were delighted to discover such a wonderful facility on their doorstep. 45 people took part in the walk.
Organisers quoted:
"We would never have been able to stage this event without the grant and our thanks to you all again for allowing us to take part.
We are already planning for next year, and another 10 volunteers have already put their name forward to help with that event."
