On Sunday 25 July over 60 participants including 35 Young People plus 10 volunteers were part of this school sports day event as part of London 2012 Open Weekend and the Essex Rural Community Fund.

The event happened at Clacton County High School, Clacton-on-Sea, Tendring between 12:00 and 17:00.

The event started with a torrential downpour. But the rain did not stop people from all sections of the community to participate. Several young people who had autism and mental health issues were able to participate and said they felt part of a team, and were able to join in all- there were a range of 12 events that included traditional sports events. The age ranged from 70 to 4 years.

The event started with an Olympic inspired torch relay and ended the with an Olympic inspired medal presentation.

People commented:

“this is a good way for families to get together and have fun in the community “

“I am trying to get fit and enjoy sport- this is a good start can we do it every week.”

“It teaches people about team spirit and competing, and being a good sport”

“It brings the competitive spirit out in all of us!”

The event was a success and the Mad About Theatre Company are very grateful to Essex County Council for the opportunity to have run this event- it has been fun to organise and the community spirit has grown!
