Essex Boys and Girls clubs with Essex Carrying the Flame are now exploring ways that rowing can increase young peoples physical activity through informal session, possibly in conjunction with an existing project that challenges young people to design music or in a new project that will form an indoor rowing league.
The Young people from the group are currently looking at ways of funding new rowing machines and training courses (Primarily the Youth opportunities fund) that will allow more groups to take part in these projects over a longer period of time and contribute to leaving a legacy that will provide better life chances for young people in Essex.
The Essex Carrying the Flame is an Essex County Council framework set up to encompass sport and cultural activiites with cross curricular links.
A support pack was launched in the summer of 2008 just before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The pack is filled with ideas exploring some of the vast opportunities the Games can offer across the curriculum, as Essex County Council aims to bring the Olympic & Paralympic values alive in the county’s primary, infant and junior schools.
September 2009 two new members of staff set up the Essex Carrying the Flame Games team with the PE Advisory service at Essex County Council to Support the development and delivery of Essex County Council's priority to increaese Children and young people's participation in high-quality PE and sport. The team will be working on this project, which through the pan Essex School Sports Partnerships framework, children and young people will participate in Olympic and Paralympic type events from school to partnership to county level. There will also be a cross curricular and cultural element attached to the games.
