The Chelmsford Mini Games is a competitive event for children in year 2 (aged 6 and 7); delivered by Chelmsford Borough Council and Chelmsford School Sports Partnerships, held at Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre annually in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Parlympic Games.

The Chelmsford Mini Games was awarded the London  2012 Inspire Mark in 2010 for reflecting many of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic values. 

Essentially the event is using the insipration of the London 2012 Games to encourage children to take part in sport, physical activity and cultural activity through a renactment of an Olympic Games complete with opening and closing ceremonies  where each school represents a different country, illustrated by banners, flags and masks.

The event also reflects Olympic/Paralympic themes of Volunteering with  approximately 70 volunteer leaders from the secondary schools running the activities under the supervision of teachers and Chelmsford Borough Council  staff.

The Chelmsford Mini Games has been growing in success since June 2008, just before the Beijing 2008 Games and the official handover of the Olympic and Paralympic flags to London.

The event involves all schools in the Borough (approximately 50 in total) with an average of 1500 children taking part each year between 2008 and 2012. 

In 2009 there were six separate and distinct events over the three days with one  group of schools participating in a morning session and another group of schools participating in an afternoon session over the three days.  There was an opening and closing Ceremony for each of the six events with a Marching Band, Stilt walkers and Cheerleaders.

At the end of each session, results were presented in the style of an Olympic /Paraympic Medal ceremony with the winning particpants experiencing what it might be like to win a medal a huge international sporting event.
