Education and Skills

Education shall be a key tool in ensuring a sustainable legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Essex.  Young people were a crucial element in London winning the 2012 Games Bid.   The response from young people in Essex to the potential that the Games offers has been extremely positive, regardless of their level of personal interest in sport.  The Games offer Great opportunities to develop citizenship and leadership amongst young people.

The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games can be used as an inspirational theme to all learners, including those who have not thrived in an environment of mainstream education.  The 2012 Games can be used as a catalyst for increasing the range and take up of skills and learning opportunities in all settings.

The purest Olympic ideals are about achieving your full potential and this is extended to inspiring all people to secure greater achievements in all spheres through extending their skills and learning as well as their sporting achievements and levels of physical activity.

The Essex Strategic Board for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has an Education and Skills sub group.  The group is focussed on using the Games to inspire learning in all forms and to promote Education and Skills development through the anticipation and impact of the Games.

The London 2012 Get Set programme

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) launched its domestic education programme 'Get Set' in September 2008 an online programme and resource to involve young people in the excitement and inspiration of the Games.

Click here to see how many Essex Schools are currently registered on Get Set.

In October 2009 LOCOG launched the 'Get Set Network' enabling schools registered for the programme to use a bespoke London 2012 Education logo to promote its committment.  The aim of the Get Set network is to bring schools, colleges and non-mainstream learning providers together and  encouraging them to integrate the Olympic and Paralympic Values into their planning for sustained improvement. In this way the London 2012 Games will leave a lasting educational, cultural and social legacy

The London 2012 Education Programme

The activity in schools on September 17 2008 launched London 2012’s domestic Education programme which 'went live’ the following day on the 18 September 2008.  The core of the programme is based on creating a UK-wide network of schools and other educational institutions in which children and young people are empowered to demonstrate and live their commitment to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games values.

A new interactive website is being developed to support children and young people in learning about, exploring and committing to the values of Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Inspiration, Determination, Courage and Equality. There will be dedicated sections for children and young people of different ages, practitioners and senior management.

The website will contain resources, films and updated news to help support and shape the children’s and young people’s projects.  Children and young people will work with their practitioners to develop goals and targets which are relevant to their place of learning and, crucially, build on existing national and local objectives.  An accreditation programme will provide incentive and reward to those who get involved, with a range of opportunities including the use of special London 2012 education branding, which will be designed by children and young people through a competition to be launched later this year.  Through the programme, participating schools and colleges will also be able to access further information to support young peoples learning through the areas of citizenship, healthy active living, culture and creativity, PE and sport, internationalism, sustainability and regeneration, enterprise and practical learning,

The International Education Programme

As part of its contract with the IOC, LOCOG will run an international programme alongside the domestic education programme.  This will encompass two streams of work:

a) A London 2012 international citizenship programme that will engage young people all over the world in a conversation about the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games values. Currently under development more information on this project will be available towards the end of 2008.
b) An International Sports Development Programme will be developed and shaped with UK Sport, the British Council and UNICEF amongst others.  The first phase of the programme will include pilot programmes in five countries around the world looking specifically at how the 2012 Games can inspire young people to participate in sport.

Complementing these initiatives, LOCOG will also run an International Olympic Youth Camp in 2012 which will see 2 children from each competing nation coming together to explore the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games values and UK culture interacting with young people from across the UK and experiencing the excitement and atmosphere of an Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG)  formally invited all schools across the UK to lead the celebrations around the Paralympic Handover on September 17, 2008.

A new website and resources was launched to help staff, children and young people develop their plans for marking the moment the Paralympic Flag is handed from the Mayor of Beijing over to the Mayor of London; Paralympic Handover Day.

Essex Activity

The Education and Skills sub group meets as part of the Thames Gateway Education and Skills Commissioning Board.  The Board brings together the heads of schools and education across Essex, Southend and Thurrock with various education provider representatives and is chaired by the Learning and Skills Council, providing the natural place for discussions on education, skills and London 2012.

Three task and finish groups have been set up to explore the specific actions required to deliver the Learning and Development actions in the Delivery Plan:

a) Schools Curriculum task and finish group to explore opportunities related to the schools curriculum in both primary and secondary sectors.
b) 14-19 Curriculum task and finish group to explore the Further Education/Higher Education and adult education and skills development opportunities.
c) Supporting Volunteers task and finish group to explore the opportunities the Games will provide the voluntary sector and volunteers.

Each of the task and finish groups are in the process of developing their actions through which they will take their respective areas forward.

Fantastic Me

‘Fantastic me’ is a programme of health challenges/game/simulation developed by Essex County Council that teachers can play with their children over a five week period encouraging them to explore, experiment and change aspects of their lifestyle.  For five weeks the children pretend they are in training for a major sports event.  During this period they interact with a group of characters including the coach, the manager, the spy (who watches other teams), the fans (who ask questions) and even the Prime Minister. The ‘properties’ are uploaded to the children’s own ‘homepage’, apparently by the games characters.

‘Fantastic me’ was piloted in three primary schools and was rolled out in the Chelmsford District in spring 2008 through the schools sports partnerships.
