Since London won the bid in 2005, Essex has been working hard to ensure that its people will benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games long after the Games are over.

There are so many ways in which Essex can benefit and here are just a few of the reasons why.

  • Essex is the closest county to East London and the Olympic Park with excellent road and rail links to the Olympic park and direct services central London.
  • Essex will host the Olympic Mountain bike events and is the neighbouring county to the venue for the London 2012 Canoe slalom events at Lee Valley White Water Centre.
  • Essex has 18 LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) accredited facilities including two brand new world class facilities suitable for Pre-Olympic and Paralympic Games Training.
  • Essex has two International airports including Britain’s third largest airport BAA London Stansted and two international ferry ports.
  • Essex has outstanding diversity in landscape, with the longest coastline in England and areas of natural beauty and tranquil countryside.
  • There are many thriving business opportunities in Essex and high quality educational institutions nurturing entrepreneurship and success.

Thanks to a committed partnership, some incredible projects and opportunities have been delivered in Essex through themes of sport, culture, education, volunteering and business. This illustrates how Essex is already capitalising on the London 2012 Games related opportunities and continues to use this once in a life time opportunity to improve the quality of life in Essex way beyond 2012.
